I’ve uploaded another patch. It:
- fixes the map problem where you could access any level by clicking around
- changes how the ESC key works (thanks, Gregory)
- attempts to fix some rare, bizarre issues (falling through terrain)
- updates the manual
Get it by clicking here. The full installer is being uploaded, but as usual will take a few hours.
So, apart from some smaller issues, v1.2 seems to be okay. Not perfect yet, but not as catastrophic as v1.1. One more update and I think we have something approaching a final version that I can actually start telling more people about.
Thanks again for the feedback, everyone.
Okay, version 1.2 is up. I am going to do a proper announcement later. It’s been a long day, and I need some food and relaxation first.
I hope this works. I so do.
For those of you who downloaded v1.1 of Phenomenon 32, which had a game-stopping bug, I have quickly uploaded a patch (36.6 MB). The main download hasn’t been updated yet, because uploading the game takes a long time. But I am hoping that this will be the final version of Phenomenon 32 for now, or at least the version with no major bugs (small issues, usually to do with hardware or problems inherent in Construct, are likely to persist).
If it really works properly on all current versions of Windows, I can finally start pushing this game a little, so that people actually get to play it.
I am very grateful, by the way, for all your feedback. Fighting these issues has been a very frustrating experience, but your help is appreciated. Thanks.
Yes, v1.1 has a bug. It’s almost certainly due to a tiny, tiny error somewhere. I am doing my best to fix it. Don’t play v1.1 – there’s no point.
Sorry.
Edit: looks like for some reason, a single line of code from v1.0 disappeared. It was probably an accident while I was changing the name of the folder the game saves to. The result was that the file which keeps the map data was getting deleted.
Edit Again: Tests seem to confirm this. In v1.1, dying caused the game to delete your found areas. With the line of code back, everything’s OK.
Last Edit: I’m uploading a patch.
So, here’s another attempt at making this work. If you’re on Windows 7, could you download this and tell me if it works?
The program will attempt to create a folder and a file in that folder in your AppData folder. It will also tell you if it succeeded or not.
(The current version of Phenomenon 32 attempts to save its data in MyDocuments, which is pretty standard for games, but doesn’t work properly with Windows 7, possibly because Windows 7 uses a different folder structure than XP and Vista. But maybe this here will work. If it does, problem solved.)
I got up this morning feeling rather sick. Then, being paranoid after yesterday’s problems, I decided to have another look through the code to make sure the game is OK.
I believe it will be released today.
One thing I can say with some certainty, though, is this: I like it. Playing it again today has reminded me of why I worked so hard on this game in the first place. It won’t be to everyone’s liking, and some will call it clunky or confusing or I don’t know what, but I like it. This is the kind of game that I, as a player, enjoy playing.
It’s good for me to remember that.
OK, Verena and I figured out what was wrong.
It’s the directory names. If the directory name is too long, it causes the game to crash. Install it to “Program Files\Phenomenon 32″ and it crashes. “Program Files\Ph32″ is fine. Probably something to do with its saving and loading of files. So now I just have to alter the installer and make sure everything works.
God, this was insane. Sky Cat is having way too much fun with me.
I can’t believe it. Problems. Again.
This time it appears to be a problem with… well, something. The game only works if installed on the desktop. WTF?
I’m working on solving the issue. The problem clearly has something to do with the creation of folders and files. It can’t be impossible to fix.
Right?
I’ve gotten two timeouts while trying to upload Phenomenon 32. Grrr. The horrors of uploading large files…
The game is still coming out today, though, unless the frigging internet crashes.
