Phenomenon 32 FAQ

Q: What kind of game is this?

A: I don’t really like to categorize games too much, but I suppose you could call it a kind of “Metroidvania” game, if that rather odd term means something to you. It’s a platformer with RPG elements and a heavy emphasis on exploration. But don’t play it expecting Metroid of Castlevania, because you’ll be disappointed.

Q: The game is too hard! What do I do?

A: Play more slowly. Take your time, and be careful – you’re not up against a time limit, and rushing doesn’t help.

Q: The game is too easy! What do I do?

A: Play with your eyes closed.

Q: Why are the system requirements so high?

A: There’s a variety of reasons. The game was developed in Construct, which is a game creation kit, and not a programming language – and is thus slower. It’s also got quite a bit going on in each of its levels, and uses some rather gigantic image files. Sorry. I can’t do anything about this.

Q: The game crashed!

A: I have unfortunately been forced to accept that the current version is unstable on some systems, and won’t be able to do anything about this for a while. I’m more sorry about this than you can imagine, but there’s not much I can do at the moment. Do drop me a line if you think I might be able to help, though.

If the game is only crashing when you start it up the first time, and then runs perfectly, try installing it outside Program Files.

Q: How long is this game?

A: It’s not tiny. I wouldn’t classify it as a casual game. I can’t really guess at the number of hours it takes to finish – it depends on your style – but I don’t think you’ll be finishing it in one session. If you just want a quick fix, something else might be better for you.

Q: I liked this game! What can I do to support it?

A: Right now, I’ll be perfectly happy if you say some nice things about it, or support my other projects.

Q: I hated this game! What can I do about that?

A: Relax a bit. Then go play Metroid II. If you don’t like Metroid II, you cannot be helped. Consider getting a job at the Daily Mail.

Q: I can’t find the way to Dryanovo!

A: That’s because it’s an idiotic place. Here’s how you get there:

To get to Dryanovo, you need to find the exit in the upper left corner of the marshes at 1232|1056. That should reveal an anomaly, which leads to an underground shelter. The shelter in turn has an exit that can only be opened with the plasma weapon, which leads to a series of areas that ultimately get you to Dryanovo.

Q: I have another question!

A: Send me an email, or leave me a comment. I try to be helpful, I really do.

Hey, er, sorry about bothering you – but I’ve been wondering whether it’s possible to completely restart the game. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but the save files seem to remain. Do you know how to achieve this, or is it simply not possible?

  2. That’s a good question, and one I should add to the FAQ. The save files are in Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Phenomenon 32 Saves.
(And the next version of the game should have a special option for this. And many other things.)

  3. Stefan

Indeed, this is a game worth producing a next version.
    My opinion:
    Never change the graphics!
    Make the game longer.
Add a hint concerning the way to dryanovo.
Give it someone to make a quicker version using a programming language.
    Wonderful game!

I read your extensive article in the escapist, and decided to try this game out.

Luckily, Phenomenon 32 has only crashed twice on me, but they have not been game breaking. So far so good, I have been sad, angry, happy and more happy with this game, all in this particular oder. I was sad how punishing the game can be at start, but later on the game is not so hard.

I love the fusion between a metroid game with rpg and rts elements. As well as, the voice acting was done well, and the fashion of how the story progresses through exploring the world, even the if it is the same level, was interesting to me. BIT TWO THUMBS UP MAN. keep up the great work, and we hope to see more of this game in a near future 😀

PS: I hope you can allow someone to try to re write the game in an actual programming language so that more people play it, and see how good it truly is.

Hello, yeah… During the 2D gameplay it’s good, but during the cinematic and the map, it’s like that 🙁 I’ll wait to get back home to play it then.

In the meantime I enjoyed very much your other games! I really like what you do!

  6. Trev

Found the controls very annoying at first (having to hit shift and then push up to jump high, where hitting up too soon with leave to almost stationary) but once you get a few upgrades (boost) I guess they aren’t so bad. But once the game starts to open up it’s really quite good, the sad thing is though i think i encountered a game breaking bug. I got all the comm stations and ran the upgrade which allowed me to access the trasnmissions only problem is all the previous areas disappeared so I can’t revisit levels or progress at all now. Any way i enjoyed what i’d played so far and if there is a workaround let me know.

  7. wouter

    real nice,

unfortunately all places vanished from the map after some time (exept for the base and the last place I visited)
Is there a way to restore at least the basic cities so i can reexplore?

  8. Came here after starting the game up today and finding all of my progress wiped.

Looks like there’s nothing I can do. 🙁

There is so much that could be done with a remake of P32. I honestly hope it’s up for consideration after your next game.

  9. Ah, I guess you’ve run into the Fatal Map Bug. I’ve never been able to understand why it happens, since it seems to be completely random. I’m so sorry. 🙁

I would love to remake Phenomenon 32. It is one of my best games, and it breaks my heart that it doesn’t work as it should.
