Merry Christmas

That song says everything that needs to be said. As for us, we’ll be listening to “Freddy the Red Brained Mi-Go” and waiting for Satan to come down the chimney and bring us a chocolate squid. Or something like that.

  1. Maybe fair regarding Catholicism, but unfair to Christianity (there’s a difference, actually).

The point of Christianity is simply this: Christ died for you. He didn’t have to, you didn’t earn it, but he did it anyway out of love. He didn’t do it to make anyone feel guilty; he did it to erase guilt. He didn’t do it so people could blame anyone- others or themselves- he did it to cover the blame.

Guilt, shame, blame, Jesus died to blot these out.

I’m not trying to turn this into a religious debate, so I’m gonna go eat breakfast. I just thought you should know that he got that part wrong. I find the rest of the song very moving. Especially the chorus.

  2. I don’t think he got it wrong at all – he’s talking about the religion as it is taught, not about Christ. Guilt is the primary control method of most versions of Christianity, including but not limited to Catholicism (and it was the Catholics who invented Christmas, after all).
